How it works

How an optical detector works

All optical detectors fundamentally operate in the same way, in three steps.

Illuminate the sample

A light source illuminates the inspected object, for example a banknote or a document.

Interaction with light

The object interacts with the light through absorption, reflection or transmission.

Capture the output

The output from the object is received at a detector or the eye and reveals security features.

Minimum requirements for a professional detector: 10x magnification with lighting, side white light and UV light.

Types of light

Every security feature needs a different light

A professional detector combines several types of illumination to reveal the full spectrum of security features.

Magnification and direct light

For microprint barely visible to the naked eye.

Oblique / side light

Reveals surface relief, intaglio and latent images.

Transmitted light

Transmitted light for checking the watermark.
